Film Stories is the biggest film magazine in the UK. Each issue is at least 168 pages, going out of its way to support British films and filmmakers where possible too. It’s a film magazine that talks about the movies that play in the smaller rooms of the multiplex, and the bigger rooms of the independent cinemas.

In The Bleak Midwinter Screening with Kenneth Branagh and Cast Q&A
Aim
The Film Stories Podcast branched out into live recording events in 2019 and since doing so it has gone from strength to strength with its calibre of guests. From BAFTA and Oscar winning crew, to world famous directors, it’s had them all.
Approach
In December 2023 editor of Film Stories, Simon Brew, wanted to go one better and host a very special screening of In The Bleak Midwinter. Alongside the screening he wanted to get the director, Kenneth Branagh to come along for a Q&A afterwards to be recorded as the Christmas episode of the podcast. Kenneth Branagh agreed, and even managed to assemble much of the original cast to come along too – the first time they’d all been on stage together for over 25 years.
Results
The film hadn’t been seen on the big screen since its release in 1994, and there was no digital print of the film in existence. Working with Warner Brothers US, Simon Brew and Branagh’s agent were able to get a new print made and sent over to the UK in time for the event. The studio also used this screening for Branagh to sign off the print for it. It was a sold out event, featured by the likes of Time Out, with proceeds going to homeless charity Centre Point.
